The 2009 Revised Program for the Cantor-Conductor School of the ILS
By 2008, demand had begun to increase for a more comprehensive approach to the training of cantors and choir directors in the Ukrainian Church. Previously, for almost ten years, from the mid 1990s, Lviv had been the home of an uchylyshche – training school – for cantors and choir directors, founded by Myroslav Deshchytsia. The school graduated hundreds of students, and was forced to close only because of lack of funding.
Building on the ILS’s music training programs, Fr. Galadza approached the rector’s office and faculty council of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) with a proposal to create a two-year accredited certificate program in sacred music. The newness of the program lay not only in its integration into the academic program of the UCU but also in the stress on regular practice during actual liturgical services. With the building of a separate church for pilgrims at the Studite Monastery in Univ (a perfect site for such training programs) the ILS was now able to ensure that its students sang Matins, Liturgy and Vespers every day. After each service Fr. Galadza and the other members of the teaching staff, discuss “best-practice” with the participants. And naturally, every day includes hours of training in sight reading, vocal technique, chant, ordo, history and theology.
The first such program took place in August of 2009 and included students from Eastern Ukraine and Belarus. It is a program that eminently lends itself to the needs of students from outside of Ukraine as well. For only $500 a student from North America, for example, receives three full weeks of room and board as well as instruction from some of Western Ukraine’s best cantors, choir directors, vocalists and historians.
Leading the list of instructors is Oleh Tsyhylyk, who came to prominence as the conductor of the combined 600-voice choir during Pope John Paul II’s Liturgy in Lviv in June, 2001. Prof, Tsyhylyk provides individual voice training and is renowned in Ukraine for his pedagogical abilities, having trained two generations of accomplished singers.
Mrs. Nadia Povoroznyk, the famed conductor of St. George’s cathedral choir in Lviv, is among the instructors of conducting. Her sensitivity to the spiritual depths of church music, and her unbounded professionalism – not to mention charm and communication skills – make her one of the most effective teachers in the field.
Sister Solomia Teslia of the Vincentian Sisters in Lviv teaches sight-reading and piano. As a nun who chants the office daily, she has developed a spiritual depth, which, combined with her training at the Lviv Conservatory (graduate of the Conducting Department) enables her to bring out the best in her students.
Responsible for instruction in chant itself (tones etc) are Andriy Shrabyuk and Maksym Tymo of the Ukrainian Catholic University. Not only are the two virtuoso cantors in their own right, but both are committed to a broadening and revitalization of the “repertoire” of chant in the Ukrainian Churches. Young people today seek to give voice to their spirituality with ever new compositions and styles of singing, and Mrs. Shrabyuk and Tymo have responded to that search brilliantly.
It goes without saying that students receive the best possible instruction in the history of church music as well as its theology and spirituality from Profs. Yasinovsky and Syrotynska, and Fr. Galadza, not to mention the monks of the Studite Monastery in Univ who provide a daily example of Christian commitment and sacrifice.
